Desirable Movement (2016)

Two-channel video work, text-based works

A public demonstration requires participants that can get out of bed. Such participation isn’t an act all can afford. Meanwhile, protests and experiences that have political meaning take place elsewhere.

Performers: Noha Ramadan and Zoë Knights.

“Consisting of texts snippets on three screens placed on floor, marking tape, a violet carpet/cover, and a short two-channel video, Hannikainen elaborates on who has the body capital to protest, to move, be visible, get out of bed. The texts on screens describe complicated, everyday political situations. The video piece shows a person trying to keep another person standing or sitting but the latter keeps falling, having no energy in their body. At times, the two bodies seem to be cuddling, but the sharp voice from the second screen keeps problematising the very foundation of its own agenda, without the work becoming mere cynicism. The sterile ambience sound gives a feeling of a rehearsal space, or perhaps being locked in.” (Mia Wennerstrand)
